Inspire - High potential and gifted education
At Riverstone High School, we are proud to be part of the Department of Education's Inspire HPGE Program, dedicated to meeting the needs of high potential and gifted students within our community. The Department’s High Potential and Gifted Education policy highlights four key domains of high potential: creative, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional. While our school embraces all these domains across various programs, we are especially proud to offer a dedicated Extension Class within the Program that focuses on students demonstrating high potential in the intellectual and social-emotional areas.
Our Extension Class provides like-minded advanced learners with access to differentiated teaching and learning programs tailored to challenge and support their unique abilities. Through this class, students are encouraged to explore their intellectual curiosity and develop strong social-emotional skills, empowering them to reach their full potential in a nurturing and stimulating environment. At Riverstone High School, we celebrate the talents of our gifted learners and are committed to fostering their growth every step of the way.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Riverstone High School, Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is embedded in our daily practice. We recognise the exceptional abilities of many students and are committed to nurturing their potential into meaningful achievement and success.
- We use evidence-informed practices to identify students’ areas of high potential. This allows us to create personalised pathways that help students strengthen their achievement and thrive academically.
- Every class offers dedicated differentiation opportunities to support individual learning needs. As a result, each student is given the chance to reach their full potential in key domain areas.
- Our teachers are trained in high potential education and possess the expertise to recognise student talents. They are committed to supporting and nurturing these abilities throughout each student’s learning journey.
- We have a dedicated Extension Class in each year group, designed for students seeking further academic challenge. Entry is based on a selective test, and students who consistently excel intellectually and socially-emotionally have the opportunity to move into these classes.
We recognise that every student is unique, with their own interests, strengths, and learning styles. That’s why we offer a wide range of flexible and diverse opportunities, ensuring each student can engage in experiences that best suit their individual needs and help them thrive.
- Students deepen their strengths through a variety of extracurricular activities such as debating, Tournament of the Minds, and STEM courses. These programs provide enriching opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom.
- Potential in the creative domain is nurtured through events like our Showcase Talent Open Night, CAPA faculty display evenings, musical ensembles, and participation in various art competitions. These platforms celebrate and develop students’ artistic abilities.
- Social-emotional capacity is strengthened through our rigorous student leadership programs, including the SRC, which supports the growth of leadership skills. Senior students have the added opportunity to participate in the Senior Leadership Team and engage in activities such as visiting NSW Parliament to develop citizenship and leadership.
- Sporting opportunities are abundant, with numerous knockout teams allowing students to represent the school in competition. Our football teams proudly compete in events like the Wanderers Cup, showcasing school spirit and teamwork.
Our students take part in many important competitions, like the Premier’s Debating Challenge and the Junior State Debating Championships. These events help them improve their thinking, speaking, and teamwork skills.
Riverstone High School also joins a wide range of academic contests, including AMC Autralian Mathematics Competition, the Run Beyond Project, the Victor Chang Science Award, the Science Trivia Competition...Taking part in these activities encourages students to be curious, creative, and excited about learning in different areas.
