Industrial technology

Industrial technology is an elective based subject whereby students may undertake a range of courses which build upon the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in technology mandatory studied in Years 7 and 8.

Students may carry out one or two courses in industrial technology during Year 9 and 10. Each of these courses focuses on developing specific industry understanding and skills via the application of materials, machines, tools and processes through the planning and production of quality practical projects.

At Riverstone High School the courses offered include:

  • building and construction
  • metal
  • timber.

Course duration: All courses are 200 hour courses completed across two years, except for building and construction which is only offered as a one year course (100 hours).

Pre-requisites: Nil

Equipment required: Black leather enclosed shoes.

Fees: $40 per year for each course. This covers all materials used and maintenance and upgrading of equipment and tools for students to use in class.

Building and construction

Within the building and construction elective, students use hand tools and machinery to make several projects using various building materials. They also have access to using the Auto Shed to complete components of the course.

Students learn skills in:

  • Bricklaying
  • Paving
  • Concreting
  • Timber Framing
  • General carpentry

Projects completed during the course include:

  • Toolbox
  • Cement Floats and assorted tools
  • Saw Horse
  • Brickwall

To participate in practical components of the course, it is compulsory for students to wear leather enclosed shoes.

Metal

Industrial technology: Metal provides students with experience in using hand tools and machinery to make various projects using metal. They also learn electric arc welding. Students develop valuable workplace skills and make products that are useful and creative. Some of the tools and machinery used in the course include metal lathes, a MIG welder, pedestal drill and a grinder.

Projects made throughout the course include:

  • Jet boat
  • Toolbox
  • Junior Hacksaw
  • Letter box
  • Gate bolt
  • Adjustable clamp
  • Hammer
  • Scrolled Mirror

To participate in practical components of the course, it is compulsory for students to wear leather enclosed shoes.

Timber

Industrial Technology: Timber allows students to develop valuable workplace skills and helps students to understand the tools and materials they are using, industry opportunities and impact of technology on society and the environment. Some of the tools and machinery students use to make fabulous wood products include the bandsaw, lathe, router, biscuit jointer, trimmer and jigsaw.

Products made during the course include:

  • Coffee Table
  • Cutting Board
  • Bedside table
  • Trinket Box
  • Cabinet
  • Timber products turned on the lathe

To participate in practical components of the course, it is compulsory for students to wear leather enclosed shoes.
